ByteDance's AI homework helper app sees significant growth in US

    What's the story

Despite political obstacles, Chinese study apps, including ByteDance's Gauth, are making headway in the United States. Gauth, marketed as an "AI homework helper," has emerged as the second most downloaded education app on the App Store in the US, right behind language-learning platform Duolingo. This data comes from a market survey conducted by Data.ai, a consumer data research firm.

    Regulatory impact

Gauth's rise amid Beijing's edtech regulations

Gauth's global success indicates how some Chinese edtech firms have thrived despite Beijing's strict regulations on the sector. In July 2021, China banned private tutoring firms profiting from off-campus courses covering school curriculums. Publicly traded companies and foreign entities were prohibited from investing in or acquiring ownership stakes in these edtech enterprises. The crackdown led ByteDance to lay off thousands from its education unit, yet the company has maintained its Gauth division as one of its six major business groups.

    Expansion

    Evolution and global popularity

Initially launched as Gauthmath in 2020 with a focus on mathematics and live support from human tutors, Gauth underwent a significant rebranding in December. This transformation involved integrating AI and expanding its subject coverage. The app has seen its popularity surge not only in the US but also beyond its borders, particularly in Philippines and Canada, according to Data.ai. Gauth can scan, solve, and tutor in all subjects, offering fast and precise answers, along with access to online experts.
