It was a scoring onslaught at Gardner Field on Wednesday night when the Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse team invited Glenwood Springs to town for the Sailors’ Senior Night game.
Steamboat got off to an early lead, never relinquished it, and took a dominant 14-5 victory.
At halftime, 11 seniors and their families were celebrated on the field for their contributions to the program over the years. The 11 players — Brady Adams, Michael Dinapoli, Owen Kirby, Noah Brinkman, Charlie Reisman, Ryan Schott, Hunter DeWolfe, Finn Rodgers, Kier NyKamp, Evan Ellis and Grayson Buccino — were praised by head coach Brian Rodgers for their dedication to the team.
“It has been an honor to coach these guys,” Coach Rodgers said. “I had one his whole life, a couple of them for several years, and we’ve got a couple seniors who just showed up this spring and they have been fantastic. They come to work, they have fun, they compete, they are unbelievable in the locker room and it is exactly what we want the younger guys to see and emulate when it is their turn.”
On Wednesday, eight unique players scored at least one goal, with Ellis and sophomore Lyle Henninger each recording hat tricks.
The Sailors improved to 10-2 on the season, and are actively riding a five-game win streak in which Steamboat has outscored its opponents 57-20 in that span. The team is also 8-1 in league play.
Buccino credits Coach Rodgers for keeping the boys focused each game. He said things have been clicking all season, and the team has become more confident with each win.
“Coach keeps us to a standard,” Buccino said. “No matter what game we play, we play to the top of our game. If we play a team that might not be as good, Coach still pushes us to be the best we can. When you play at your best every game, that will continue on and you’ll get better.”
The boys now face a two-week break before the season concludes with away games against Eagle Valley on May 1 and Battle Mountain on May 3.
Finn Rodgers said last season the spring break gave the players a chance to rest and relax their muscles ahead of their postseason push. If the Sailors win both remaining games on the regular season schedule, they will win the 4A Western League.
“Right now, the first step we have to climb is winning the league,” Finn said. “That’s where our eyes are.”
