Salim Khan denounces threats against Salman, labels culprits as 'jaahil'

    What's the story

Salim Khan, the father of Salman Khan, recently addressed threats made against his son in the wake of a shooting incident near their Mumbai residence. Referring to the perpetrators as jaahil (illiterate), Khan revealed that Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has assured the family of additional police protection. The alarming incident occurred when two armed individuals approached their Galaxy Apartments residence in Bandra, fired shots, and swiftly fled the scene.

    Incident details

    'Salman will continue working normally...'

In an interview with India Today, Khan stated, "What's there to talk about ye jaahil log jo kehte hain maar denge tab pata lagega na (These illiterate people say you'll learn your lesson when we'll kill you)." He mentioned that Salman will continue to work normally as advised by authorities and that he cannot comment much about the incident as it is sub-judice. Shortly after the incident, Anmol Bishnoi—brother of incarcerated gangster Lawrence Bishnoi—claimed responsibility for the act online.

    Suspects apprehended

Meanwhile, suspects detained in connection with the case

On Tuesday, Bhuj Police detained two suspects, Vicky Gupta (24) and Sagar Pal (21), both from Bihar. Per reports, the duo will remain under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Crime Branch until April 25. They are allegedly part of the notorious Bishnoi gang—which originates from a broader desert-based religious sect—and is known for its involvement in extortion rackets. This sect believes that certain species, including the blackbuck, are the reincarnation of their revered guru.

    Long-standing fight

Why is the Bishnoi gang after Salman?

Salman has been embroiled in conflict with the Bishnoi gang since 1998, following his involvement in a recreational hunting trip where two blackbucks were shot. Over two decades, the gang has pursued a criminal case. In 2018, a local court sentenced the actor to five years in jail for violating the Wildlife Protection Act. However, the penalty was suspended shortly after Salman's imprisonment. This move prompted Lawrence to declare that his gang would take matters into their own hands.

    Personal security

Salman's personal security measures and political reactions

In response to these threats, the actor has taken high personal measures for his safety. He has obtained a personal firearm license and a new bulletproof vehicle. Separately, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey criticized the administration led by Shinde, expressing concern over the perceived lack of security and law enforcement in Mumbai and Maharashtra. "Whether it is Salman Khan or any common man, no one is feeling safe in Mumbai and Maharashtra," Dubey previously stated.
