After forcing overtime, Apex Friendship downs Holly Springs in PKs
Apex Friendship needed a late goal in the second half to force overtime, but the Patriots completed the comeback and defeated Holly Springs in penalty kicks on Monday night.
The Patriots connected on all five penalty kick attempts, claiming a 2-2 (5-4) win over Holly Springs.
Briella Boetcher put Apex Friendship on the board first. The junior forward headed the ball into the net off a corner kick in the 17th minute to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. That lead held through halftime.
Holly Springs tied the game at 1-1 in the 60th minute when Sorin Smith worked through the defense and scored. Then Allyssa Turner scored the 63rd minute to give the Golden Hawks their first lead at 2-1.
Apex Friendship had opportunities as the time ticked away, and finally Ana Soler scored in the 74th minute to tie the game at 2-2.
After two overtime periods, neither team scored, so the game went to penalty kicks.
Apex Friendship connected on all five penalty kicks, and goal keeper Lauren Zitt — who had a successful penalty kick attempt of her own — denied the fourth attempt by Holly Springs.
Soler was the last player to attempt a penalty kick for Holly Springs, and her score gave the Golden Hawks the win.
