A man with a knife was shot by a police officer Monday afternoon at a shopping center in the Oxon Hill area of Prince George’s County, authorities said.

The man suffered one or more wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to an official with the Forest Heights police department.

The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. at Oxon Hill and Livingston roads. The man was in a car that had been linked to a suspect in an assault in another jurisdiction, according to a spokeswoman for the Forest Heights police.

The car had set off a tag reader in Forest Heights, and town police followed it to the shopping center about a mile away, said Officer Lisa White.

There, according to Forest Heights Deputy Police Chief Kirk Banton, the occupant of the car was asked to get out. At first he declined, and when he did, he was armed with a knife, Banton said.

During the encounter, a Forest Heights officer shot the man, Banton said. After immediate aid was rendered, the man was taken to a hospital.

Few other details were immediately available.
