'Peacemaker' S02: James Gunn kickstarts production; shares photo from set
James Gunn has officially begun production for the second season of the DC series Peacemaker. The announcement was made via a set photo posted on Gunn's Instagram, featuring a reflection on the shiny helmet of the Peacemaker, played by John Cena. The caption "Day 1, S2" confirmed the start of filming for the upcoming season. Notably, Season 1 premiered on HBO Max in 2022.
'Peacemaker' Season 2 set in new DC Universe
The upcoming season of Peacemaker will reportedly be set in a new DC Universe, distinct from the previous DC Extended Universe continuity. This fresh setting will likely delve into the aftermath of Gunn's forthcoming Superman movie, thereby creating an interconnected foundation for DC's revamped universe. Despite this shift in continuity, most of the main cast from the first season are set to return.
Cena returns as Peacemaker in the revamped universe
Cena will reprise his role as Peacemaker in the new DC Universe. He first portrayed this passionate peace advocate in 2021's The Suicide Squad. His performance in Season 1—which explored paternal issues, extraterrestrial imposters and shocking revelations about DC's most notable heroes—was well-received by audiences. Other cast members, including Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, and Robert Patrick, will also reprise their roles.
'Peacemaker' S02 slated for late 2025 release
The second installment is scheduled to be a part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, following the animated series Creature Commandos, set to premiere in late 2024. While it won't be initiating the DCU, Peacemaker will connect to its first major cinematic installment. S02 is projected to hit screens in late 2025. Meanwhile, work has also commenced on a spin-off series titled Waller.
Gunn is balancing directing duties for 'Peacemaker' and 'Superman'
Due to his commitment to the Superman movie, Gunn will not be directing every episode of Season 2. However, he confirmed that both projects are closely related and are being filmed simultaneously. To assist with the workload, three additional directors will join him for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, S02 will reportedly maintain the format of eight episodes, mirroring the structure of S01.
