Visiting the grocery store after work or on the weekends can feel like a free-for-all — everyone's scrambling for the freshest produce, the lines are long and the aisles are too crowded. Luckily, a produce delivery service can send healthy fruits and nutrient-dense vegetables to your doorstep, saving you time, energy and a headache. Meal delivery services and online grocery shopping are great options for busy food lovers, but a produce delivery service can be more useful if you follow a plant-based diet or simply want locally sourced, fresh fruits and veggies.

Registered dietitians in the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab tested over 20 options to find the best produce delivery services. Beyond tasting a bunch of delicious fruits and veggies, our Lab pros also evaluated produce sourcing, quality, freshness, variety, sustainability practices, ease of ordering and more. We even sent the boxes to home cooks across the nation for real-life feedback.

After you've gotten all the produce you need, check out our favorite vegan meal delivery services for nutritious dinner recipes or our top-tested seafood subscription boxes if you follow a pescatarian diet.

Pros
  • Selection of organic produce and sustainable groceries
  • Affordable prices
  • Skip a box or pause your plan at any time
Cons
  • Personalizations must be made to your order before the shopping window closes

This online value grocery store delivers high-quality foods at affordable prices and aims to reduce food waste. The brand works directly with farmers and food producers to source all of its products, including organic produce. Perfectly good food that would have otherwise gone to waste is delivered to your doorstep at a fraction of traditional grocery store prices.

Imperfect Foods (a produce and grocery delivery service we tested and love) merged with Misfits Market in 2023 to further combat food waste and reduce CO2 emissions with deliveries. The company still operates with a separate website and makes snacks with upcycled ingredients, like Yogurt-Covered Pretzels with Sprinkles.

How it works: Begin with a curated cart featuring organic produce and sustainably sourced groceries including high-quality meats, seafood and pantry staples. Then, remove or add items to personalize your cart. Your order gets automatically checked out when your three-day shopping window closes each week, so be sure to make any changes before then. You can skip a box or pause your plan at any time.

Lab results: Our testers were pleased with the selection and said ordering was fairly simple, though you'll need to take note of the shopping window. Items arrived on time, and deliveries were fresh for both our experts and at-home testers — no squashed produce here. The produce was packed well, with several cold packs to ensure freshness, but note that all items come in one box, including shelf-stable goods. Several testers were impressed with the freshness of the produce, and one said, "I was actually surprised by the quality of most of the items in the box and most were better than I have been able to find at my local supermarket."

Pros
  • Produce delivered within hours
  • Consistent selection and variety
  • Receive updates on your order in real time
Cons
  • Not all deliveries come in insulated bags

One of the challenges with many produce delivery services is availability. You'll rarely find options that ship fruits and veggies nationwide and even fewer that deliver the same day. But Amazon Fresh, also one of our top grocery delivery services, offers a wide selection of fresh produce that you can have delivered within a few hours.

How it works: You'll need to be an Amazon Prime member to take advantage of Amazon Fresh. Select from a variety of fresh produce, packaged foods and more on the Amazon digital interface which we found easy to navigate. Choose a delivery window that works for you, and get live updates as your shopper assembles your order. While many customers use the service to shop from Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh offers a wide variety of quality products at low prices.

Lab results: Our experts and testers alike loved the convenience of same-day delivery. The interface is easy to navigate, and your order history will be listed among your other Amazon orders for quick reference. The produce was good quality, and the selection featured everything you'd need to whip up nutritious meals and snacks. "The organic Honeycrisp apples were juicy, fresh and packaged well," a tester said. You'll want to be home to promptly move the produce into the fridge though, since not all deliveries come in insulated bags.

Best Seasonal Produce

Hungry Harvest

Pros
  • Consciously sourced, rescued produce
  • Orders can be customized
Cons
  • Very limited delivery area
  • Last minute swaps based on availability

Rescued produce is the focus of this sustainable online grocer that sells fruits and veggies that are perfectly fresh but would have otherwise gone to waste for being too big or too small or misshapen. Items are consciously sourced and organic options are available.

How it works: Start by selecting a pre-set produce box that comes in a variety of sizes. You can then customize your selection and add on other grocery staples. You'll have the option to switch the harvest you receive for future orders too. There are occasionally last-minute swaps based on availability since the selections are seasonal, but you can specify up to six types of items that you don't want to receive on your "Never List."

Lab results: The rescued produce was fresh, and we love the concept of repurposing fruits and veggies that would have otherwise gone to waste. "The fruit was on the smaller side, but it all tasted great," one tester said. Everything was delivered in a timely manner, and the variety was a welcome shake-up to weekly meal prep. "Quick, easy, fresh and no decision-making," another tester commented. We wish the delivery area were larger and that you had more control over what produce comes in your harvest box, but it's a solid choice if you are within the delivery area.

The Fruit Company

Pros
  • In-season fruit delivered every month with subscription
  • Gift boxes with fresh fruit, cheese and chocolate
  • Premium quality
Cons
  • Cannot individually select types of fruits you'll receive

Fruit tastes delicious paired with cheese or chocolate, so a gift box from The Fruit Company is the perfect present for any occasion. This service offers a medley of fruits with snacks for a one-time order or a subscription option to receive premium-quality fruits every month.

How it works: Choose from one of four Monthly Fruit Clubs to receive seasonal fruit every month depending on your taste interests. Starting at $119, each subscription lists the fruit being shipped out each month. You can also send a pre-set gift box starting at $34 that includes a medley of fruits, cheese, crackers and/or sweets to someone or yourself — self-care is important too!

Lab results: The fruit is carefully packaged and comes in great condition. I remember receiving an assortment of fruit including apples and my husband said that they were the most perfect-looking apples he had ever seen — and they tasted great too. While the fruit is delicious, it's not the best option for frequent produce delivery. The Monthly Fruit Clubs only send one or two types of fruit per month. Instead, I recommend utilizing this service for sending someone an edible gift like the Classic Gourmet Gift Box.

Pros
  • Premium quality produce
  • Gifting options available
  • Specialty fruits
Cons
  • Not ideal for meal planning

Known for fresh fruit boxes and gift baskets, the iconic Harry and David brand offers gourmet fruit-of-the-month club collections that are perfect for fruit enthusiasts and gifting. Vegetable options are available too.

How it works: Select from a variety of collections, including seasonal fruit, exotic and specialty fruits, fruit and cheese pairings and even an organic fruit box. Boxes start at $94.99 for three months depending on the variety, and you can purchase up to 12 months in advance. You can also select which month you'd like your deliveries to start. Other monthly clubs through the brand include decadent chocolates, chocolate-dipped fruit, wine and more. There is even a beautiful veggie of the month club.

Lab results: The premium quality of the fruit stood out to our registered dietitians. The service isn't ideal for grocery shopping and meal planning, but it's great for snacking and gifting. "I can tell a huge difference in quality and now understand why people buy produce from gourmet brands," one tester said.

"I think it would be a unique gift for someone who enjoys fresh fruit and trying new things," another added. "I would definitely purchase again for myself just because the quality is much better than I get at the local grocery store."

Pros
  • High-quality, premium vegetables
  • Customizable boxes available to support health goals
  • Utilizes regenerative farming methods for fresher vegetables
Cons
  • No fruit selection

Farm-fresh produce gets delivered straight to your door with this veggie-forward service from The Chef's Garden. The service was started as a way to bring high-quality produce to chefs, but you can now enjoy it right in the comfort of your own home.

How it works: Choose a seasonal box, build your own or select a box with options designed to support nutrition goals such as heart health. Gifts are also available, and the service features mostly vegetables.

Lab results: The quality of the produce from The Chef's Garden was some of the best we saw in our tests. "The vegetables and lettuce were very fresh. So much better than purchasing in the grocery store," one tester said. I appreciate that the service utilizes regenerative farming methods too but keep in mind there is no fruit available to order. "The taste was outstanding," another tester said. "It also introduced us to different preparation options to allow us to use the produce quickly."

Most Unique Fruits

Tropical Fruit Box

Pros
  • Unique, exotic fruit selection
  • Fully customizable boxes available
  • Instruction cards included
Cons
  • Most boxes offer only one type of fruit

Expand your palate with this fruit delivery service specializing in tropical produce. Produce comes mostly from family farms in Florida, California, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

How it works: Create your own box and customize your tropical fruit choices by selecting three to six options per order. You'll find unique options like rambutan, mangosteen, soursop, red passion fruit and lychee, among many refreshing others. You can also purchase a surplus of just one fruit with a popular fruit box. The brand even has a dedicated set of boxes featuring pink pineapple.

Lab results: I love that the service introduces customers to a wide variety of unique fruits that are less commonly available. Testers agreed, with one saying, "I think it's a creative way to get people to eat more fruits and veggies that they would normally shy away from in the grocery store." Testers and experts also liked the inclusion of cards that tell you how to use the fruit and how to know when it is ready. "Great fruit selection. The fruit was not ripe yet which is great because then I got longer to enjoy it," one tester said.

For produce delivery services, our registered dietitians not only researched the offerings but actually tried every single service for ourselves over the course of three months (and made some incredibly nutritious, veggie-forward meals). We recruited over 70 at-home testers across the nation to try the services and make sure the produce arrived fresh and in good condition.

Our top picks offer great quality, variety and fresh produce conveniently delivered directly to your door. As a result of our testing, we believe the companies above deserve recognition for their performance in their categories. That said, this is a fast-growing segment of the food industry, and we're likely to see exciting new entrants emerging in the near future. We are currently and constantly testing new offerings in this category to keep readers up-to-date.

What to look for when selecting a produce delivery service

line break

✔️ Selection: Are you looking for both fruits and vegetables, solely exotic fruits or just seasonal produce? Based on your meal planning and personal dietary needs, make sure the service you choose offers enough selection and variety to make the purchase worthwhile.

✔️ Customization: Do you prefer a service that builds your cart for you based on what produce is in season? This can inspire creativity in the kitchen and help you try new things you may not have picked up in the grocery store. Perhaps you would rather try a subscription that you can customize. Some offer the best of both worlds, starting you off with a set cart of seasonal produce and then allowing you to make adjustments as you please.

✔️ Sustainability: Several of these services offer rescued produce to help reduce food waste. These are typically fruits and vegetables that may be too big or too small, have minor cosmetic imperfections or are in surplus but are still perfectly good and safe to eat. If you're looking for picture-perfect fruit, then this option won't be ideal for you.

✔️ Groceries: Many of the best produce delivery services specialize in just fruit and veggies, but some also offer the option to buy other groceries so you can get everything for the week in one order. Certain services only offer shelf-stable items, whereas others include options to buy high-quality meat and more. If you're looking for a larger selection, check out our top-tested online grocery services.

✔️ Delivery: Sourcing high-quality local produce and shipping it nationwide is no easy task. Delivery availability can be limited in certain places, so check the delivery regions for the service you plan to try. Order frequency is something else to consider and whether or not the service will allow you to pause or change your subscription timing.

✔️ Gifting: Several of our top-rated produce services make the perfect healthy and unique gift for friends and family. Some let you send just a box of fruit to your loved one, whereas others give you the option to gift a short or long-term subscription.

✔️ Refunds and returns: Many services will not allow an exchange for faulty or damaged produce but will typically make it up by refunding you for part of your order or adding a perk to your next delivery. This can be a challenge if you were banking on a certain type of produce for meal planning during the week.
