Mira Costa girls beach volleyball receives top seed in CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs

The defending champion Mustangs have a first-round bye

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

The Mira Costa girls beach volleyball team received the top seed for the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs that begin this week.

The Mustangs (13-0), who won the inaugural CIF-SS championships last season, have a first-round bye. They will begin the playoffs Saturday against Aliso Niguel or Notre Dame.

Redondo (11-2), the Bay League runner-up, is third seed in Division 1.

The Sea Hawks lost to the Mustangs in last season’s Division 1 final. Mira Costa beat Redondo 5-0 in their first match this season, but the second one was closer, as Mira Costa won 3-2.

Redondo will begin the playoffs Thursday against San Clemente.

Palos Verdes (7-4), the third-place team from the Bay League, will host Dana Hills in Thursday’s opening round.

The semifinals and final are April 27 at Long Beach City College.

In Division 2, El Segundo (7-4) will open with a wild-card match Tuesday against Gahr.

In other wild-card matches Tuesday, Bishop Montgomery (6-1) will host Mayfair and South Torrance (7-4) will host Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana.

Pioneer League champion West Torrance (8-2) will host Millikan or Newbury Park in the first round Thursday.

In the final CIF-SS Division 2 poll, Bishop Montgomery, West, South and El Segundo were ranked sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.
