Aspen High School students prepare for IB testing
School district will host celebration for students completing IB exams

The Aspen School District is gearing up for International Baccalaureate testing with a celebration for high school seniors who are completing IB courses.
Aspen High School is gearing up for a series of events and celebrations to honor the senior class ahead of IB exams, which begin April 25. All juniors and seniors at Aspen High School are enrolled in IB Diploma Programme coursework.
“As educators, we are immensely proud of our students’ accomplishments,” said Eileen Knapp, an IB Diploma Programme coordinator in a news release. “Their dedication and perseverance have prepared them well for the journey ahead after high school.”
Seniors and their families will have a special kick-off lunch to celebrate their 12 years of academics at 11 a.m. on April 24. IB exams begin April 25 and end May 17. Students who choose to complete the full IB diploma — six IB courses and the IB core — will have an evening ceremony May 20 at Aspen High School.
The school district has had the IB Diploma Programme for juniors and seniors since 2001. In 2023, the district secured authorization for the IB Middle Years Programme for grades 6-10, after it was accepted into candidacy for the IB program in 2021.
It is now working to secure authorization for the Primary Years Programme for grades pre-kindergarten-fifth grade. The district will have a target consultation visit in 2024 to evaluate implementation of the Primary Years Programme curriculum.
District leaders have frequently highlighted the importance of having a fully aligned IB curriculum for the entire district. By securing authorization for the Primary Years Programme, it will allow teachers throughout the district to coordinate their curriculum for long-term success.
The district earned authorization for the Middle Years Programme after teaching teams began training in the fall of 2021, meeting weekly to discuss IB philosophy and the unit frameworks. The teachers collaborated to blend curriculum resources and IB learning objectives into units.
Aspen High School students have completed individual oral exams in English, and will begin written exams at the start of testing.
