Liverpool stutter in Premier League title race: Key stats

    What's the story

Liverpool suffered a shock defeat at home against Crystal Palace on matchday 33 of the Premier League 2023-24 season on Sunday. In their previous league match against Manchester United, Liverpool drew 2-2. Notably, Liverpool suffered a telling 3-0 defeat in the Europa League quarter-finals first-leg clash against Atalanta earlier this week. Seeing a massive drop in form could cost Liverpool big.

    Information

An unwanted record at Anfield for Liverpool

As per Opta, Liverpool have now conceded in each of their last nine Premier League games at Anfield. It is their joint-longest run at home without a clean sheet in the competition (also 9 in December 1996 and May 1999).

    Numbers

Liverpool are two points behind leaders Manchester City

After 32 matches, Liverpool remain third with 71 points. They suffered a third defeat this season. Liverpool had the chance to leapfrog current leaders Manchester City (73) and Arsenal (71) but a shocking defeat leaves them behind. Arsenal could go top if they beat Aston Villa and open up a four-point lead over Jurgen Klopp's men.

    Information

    Here are the match stats

Liverpool made 21 attempts but had just six shots on target. Palace had five shots on target from eight attempts. Despite having 2.87 expected goals and 54 touches in the opposition's box, Liverpool fell short. The Reds also clocked 70% ball possession.

    Opta stats

    Liverpool post these records

Liverpool have lost successive home matches in all competitions at Anfield for the first time since April 2023 (run of three matches). After going 33 matches unbeaten across all competitions at Anfield, the Reds have suffered successive defeats. Liverpool suffered their maiden home league defeat since October 2022, seeing a run of 28-game unbeaten run come to an end.

    Information

Palace find joy in massive Liverpool scalp

As per Squawka, Crystal Palace are the first side to beat Liverpool at Anfield whilst keeping a clean sheet since Fulham in March 2021. Crystal Palace ended a 13-match winless run in the Premier League against Liverpool (D2 L11).

    Match details

Wasteful Liverpool fall shot against Palace

Eberechi Eze handed Palace the lead in the 14th minute after finishing a smart team move. Jurgen Klopp's side pushed hard but paid the price for their wastefulness in front of goal. The likes of Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah came close but failed to find the target. Palace had their moments and could have scored more goals but 1-0 was sufficient.
