FC Goa, revitalized after a comeback win against Jamshedpur, are on the cusp of their best Indian Super League finish since their 2019-20 League Shield triumph. A win gainst Chennaiyin FC today could potentially propel them to the second-place spot, a scenario that depends on other results this weekend.
Head coach Manolo Marquez underscored the importance of today’s clash. “We want to, and we need to win,” he stated. “If we don’t win tomorrow and Mumbai City win in Kolkata, we would regret it.”
Marquez acknowledged Chennaiyin FC, who have already secured a playoff berth, as a formidable opponent. “Owen Coyle’s numbers speak for himself…teams that arrive [to the playoffs] in such ways are always very dangerous,” he noted.
The Gaurs’ path to second place isn’t entirely in their own hands. A win on Sunday would take them level with Mohun Bagan Super Giant, but Mumbai City FC must then defeat the Kolkata side on Monday for FC Goa to secure the runners-up spot.
Goa’s defense, anchored by Odei Onaindia, has been a major force, conceding the joint second-least goals in the league. The recent surge in form from Noah Sadaoui, complemented by stars like Brandon Fernandes and Carlos Martinez, brings additional optimism. While the suspension of Nim Dorjee Tamang is a minor setback, Marquez is determined to field his strongest side, even with several players carrying yellow card risks. A win against Chennaiyin FC is the top priority.
