Wayne Rooney pulled out of his spot as a pundit on Match Of The Day after injuring his back on a family holiday.

The Manchester United legend was set to join Gary Lineker on the hit BBC show on Saturday night but was forced to withdraw due to a back problem that he picked up.

As a result, Lineker was joined by Martin Keown and Micah Richards as they analysed fixtures including Man United's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth and Newcastle's emphatic win over Tottenham.

Taking to X, Rooney wrote: "Gutted not to be making my debut on the iconic @BBCMOTD show tonight, it’s something I have wanted to do since I was little.

"Unfortunately I have sustained a painful back injury during a holiday with my family but I look forward to being part of the team in the near future.

"Good luck to @GaryLineker and the guys for tonight's show and see you soon."

Responding to Rooney's message, Lineker said: "There’ll be other opportunities. Get fit soon," with a thumbs up emoji.

Rooney is looking for opportunities to step back into management following his sacking as Birmingham City boss in January this year.

Having previously managed Derby County and DC United, England's record goalscorer will be hoping to make a big impression when he does return.
