Bertie Ahern has advised new Fine Gael leader Simon Harris to take on a "small number of issues" as Taoiseach and says the Government should have opted for a June election instead of serving the full term.

“If it was my decision, the elections would be mid-June when it's warm and it's bright until half ten at night,” the ex-Fianna Fáil leader told reporters. “But that's not going to happen.”

The former taoiseach advised the next election take place on “the last Thursday or Friday in February” before adding: “Wear your gloves.”
