Toronto Pearson launches the Pearson LIFT Initiative, a billion-dollar plan to modernize and expand to meet rising air travel demand.
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority has unveiled an extensive, multibillion-dollar initiative to refurbish and enhance Toronto Pearson Airport. The authority has initiated the initial phase of procurement for Pearson LIFT, a project designed to accommodate the airport’s escalating traffic needs.
In 2023, Pearson facilitated travel for 45 million passengers and is projected to handle approximately 65 million passengers annually by the early 2030s, according to a statement from the GTAA.
The upgrade will involve the enhancement of current airport facilities, such as the introduction of rapid taxi lanes, an updated airfield electric lighting and control system, and temporary terminal facilities. Additionally, the plan aims to invest in power generation to support the airport’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
Looking ahead, GTAA CEO Flint expects a slight increase in Pearson’s Airport Improvement Fee to align with fees at other national airports.
GTAA chairman Doug Allingham highlighted in the announcement that the initiative is expected to generate substantial economic advantages.
