The Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Directorate of Vigilance on Friday arrested head constable Sanjay Talkar (49), who was attached to Tiracol coastal police station, in connection with corruption case. Talkar was arrested after his anticipatory bail application was rejected by the sessions court in Panaji.

The court observed that there is prima facie evidence against Talkar and that his involvement in the offence of demand for money will have a negative impact on society, more so, as the act of the applicant was a threat to the right of the complainant to earn a living by doing a business which the case papers indicate was a legal business.

The custody of the applicant is required for the purpose of determining all the other officials who are involved in the matter as there is manipulation of the records of the police station and a thorough investigation is required on this count, more so, as it is apparent that attempts have been made to falsely implicate the complainant under the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act, 2001, which is also against society, the court observed.

Last month, an FIR was registered against Talkar based on a complaint filed by a paragliding operator for allegedly demanding Rs 8000 bribe on a monthly basis so as to smoothly operate the business. In connection with the case, last week Talkar was suspended from service.
