Damon McKee out as North Mecklenburg head football coach

North Mecklenburg High School will have a new head football coach in 2024.
Former head coach Damon McKee confirmed with HighSchoolOT this morning that the school informed him that they wanted to go in another direction.
McKee took over the program ahead of the spring 2021 pandemic season. The Vikings finished 1-6 under McKee in that shortened season. The following fall, McKee led North Meck to a 7-3 overall record and to an appearance in the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 4A state playoffs. In 2022, the Vikings followed their playoff appearance with a 5-5 mark in the regular season and just missed out on playoff qualification due. Last fall, North Mecklenburg finished 5-5 once again but this time made it into the postseason. The Vikings fell to Grimsley on the road in the first round.
Over his four seasons, the Vikings finished with an 18-20 overall record and made the playoffs twice. They did pick up a couple of wins via forfeit.
North Mecklenburg competes in the Queen City 3A/4A Conference with Chambers, Hopewell, Hough, Mallard Creek, West Charlotte, West Mecklenburg, and Harding University.
The Vikings' best season came in 1992 when they reached the 4A West regional final. There, the team fell to East Forsyth.
