Fuquay-Varina's Gates Hinton sets top national discus mark of this year with 206-9.5

A Fuquay-Varina track & field athlete is now this year's national leader in the discus.

Gates Hinton threw a 206-9.5 during Wednesday's Greater Neuse River Conference quad meet at South Garner with Southeast Raleigh and Cleveland. According to MileSplit, Hinton's 206-9.5 is the top mark in the country for the 2024 season.

Hinton, a senior, is the defending 4A state champion in the discus . He threw a 179-11 at last year's championship. Naturally, Hinton was a HighSchoolOT All-State selection. He is committed to continue his track & field career at UNC-Charlotte.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association state record for the discus is 189-3, which was set by Middle Creek High School's Terrell Adams in 2016. The official state records can only be set at state championships.

Hinton was also a standout football player for the Bengals. He was named to the 2023 Greater Neuse River all-conference team.
