    77th Cannes Film Festival announces star-studded lineup; India triumphs, too

    What's the story

    The forthcoming 77th Cannes Film Festival is set to dazzle with a star-studded lineup, which was announced on Thursday afternoon (per IST). Among the highlights are Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis featuring Adam Driver, George Miller's Furiosa starring Anya Taylor-Joy, and Kevin Costner's Horizon, an American Saga. The festival will also honor George Lucas with an honorary Palme d'Or and will take place between May 14 and May 25.

    Industry resilience

    Hollywood's presence and Competition films 

    Despite last year's strikes by actors and writers causing production delays, Hollywood will still have a significant presence at the festival. Greta Gerwig will head the jury. Second Act, by Quentin Dupieux, will be the festival opener. The movies that will premiere in the Competition are Megalopolis by Coppola, The Apprentice by Ali Abbasi, Motel Destino by Karim Ainouz, Bird by Andrea Arnold, Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard, Anora by Sean Baker, and The Shrouds by David Cronenberg.

    Other movies in Competition are The Substance by Coralie Fargeat, Grand Tour by Miguel Gomes, Marcello Mio by Christophe Honore, Caught by the Tides by Jia Zhang-Ke, Kinds of Kindness by Yorgos Lanthimos, L'Amour Ouf by Gilles Lellouche, Wild Diamond by Agathe Riedinge, Oh Canada by Paul Schrader, Limonov: The Ballad by Kirill Serebrennikov, Parthenope by Paolo Sorrentino, and The Girl With the Needle by Magnus von Horn. India's Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light) is also a part.

    C'est Pas Moi by Leos Carax, En Fanfare (The Matching Bang) by Emmanuel Courcol, Everybody Loves Touda by Nabil Ayouch, Le Roman de Jim by Arnaud Larrieu and Jean-Marie Larrieu, Misericorde by Alain Guiraudie, and Rendez-Vous Avec Pol Pot by Rithy Panh are reserved for Cannes Premiere. I, the Executioner, The Balconettes, The Surfer, and Twilight of the Warrior Walled In are a part of the Midnight Screenings.

    The Village Next to Paradise by Mo Harawe, Viet and Nam by Truong Minh Quy, Vingt Dieux! by Louise Courvoisier, and Who Let the Dog Bite? by Laetitia Dosch will also be screened in the Un Certain Regard section. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga by Miller, Horizon, an American Saga by Costner, Rumours by Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson, and Guy Maddin, and She's Got No Name by Chan Peter Ho-Sun are selected for Out of Competition.

    Special Screenings and Indian triumph 

    Coming to the final category, Apprendre by Claire Simon, Ernest Cole, Lost and Found by Raoul Peck, L'Invasion by Sergei Loznitsa, Le Fil by Daniel Auteuil, and The Beauty of Gaza by Yolande Zauberman have been chosen for Special Screenings. The lineup is special for India since it features Indian filmmaker Kapadia in the main competition; The Shameless stars Mita Vashisht, Tanmay Dhanania, Auroshikha Dey, and Rohit Kokate; and Santosh stars Shahana Goswami and Sanjay Bishnoi.
