The ‘ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand’ initiative was recently announced by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and its partners. It invites tourists from ASEAN countries and India to participate by voting for their preferred Thai soft-power element. In return, participants will receive a shopping voucher. This activity is scheduled to take place from April 29th to June 15th, 2024.
TAT Governor, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, said “The project underscores the government’s policy to establish Thailand as a tourism hub, while promoting ASEAN as a single tourism destination. It also supports the government’s soft power promotion policy to raise awareness and boost sales for Thai products.”
This initiative is a component of a larger campaign aimed at boosting Thailand’s attractiveness to nearby travelers. It involves the presentation of Thailand’s cultural influence through various participating stores, where tourists can explore and purchase a range of locally made products such as Thai aromatics, delicious snacks, and stylish fashion items and accessories.
“We have designed the online quiz and the gift voucher redemption process to be easy and inclusive for ASEAN and Indian tourists, and we hope that they will take this opportunity to support Thai brands and products while exploring the influences of Thai soft power in tourism,” Ms. Thapanee said.
Passport holders from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and India can easily visit aseanindiashoppers.com to cast their votes for Thailand’s diverse cultural offerings in the categories of food, film, fashion, fight, and festivals. The website will go live on April 29, 2024.
As a gesture of gratitude, participants will receive gift vouchers and exclusive privileges ranging from 500 Baht to 3,000 Baht each. These rewards can be used to shop for Thai fashion, lifestyle brands, and authentic Thai products at select stores under King Power Corporation, King Power Click (FIRSTER), Multiply by Eight (X8), Central Group, Tops Market, Big C Supercenter, Good Goods, and Erb.
The gift vouchers and privileges are valid at participating stores located in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Chon Buri, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Songkhla, and Nakhon Ratchasima.
This initiative aims to attract 5,000 participants, contributing an estimated 131 million Baht to Thailand’s tourism revenue.
The ‘ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand’ campaign seeks to boost short-haul tourism and encourage travel and spending among visitors from ASEAN and India who view Thailand as a weekend getaway and a top shopping destination.
Due to the close proximity of these nations, travel to Thailand takes no more than two hours from neighboring countries and approximately four hours from India. Moreover, ASEAN tourists enjoy visa-free entry to Thailand, while Indian tourists benefit from a temporary 30-day visa exemption.
These favorable travel conditions, coupled with stimulating visa policies, play a crucial role in attracting repeat visitors, with 75% of ASEAN tourists returning and India emerging as the fastest-growing market.
Thailand anticipates exceeding 10 million visitor arrivals from ASEAN this year, with Indian tourists expected to reach 1.7 million, constituting 35% of the overall target of 35 million arrivals.
