Nearly two hours of running was completed in the morning on Wednesday as 28 drivers took part in the Indy Open Test for entrants of the Indianapolis 500, but the skies intervened just minutes into the long afternoon session which has compromised the NTT IndyCar Series’ ability to finish the test.
With activities cancelled for the remainder of Wednesday, the last chance for laps to be turned is on Thursday, but the forecast is worse, with rain from morning to night expected.
After Josef Newgarden posted the fastest lap of the day with his tow-assisted 228.811mph blast this morning in the No. 2 Chevy, the abbreviated afternoon session saw Andretti Global’s Colton Herta lead the 26 drivers who ventured out with a 225.907mph tour in the No. 26 Honda in the seven laps that were completed prior to the yellow flag for rainfall. Persistent rain continued to douse the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and at 4:04pm ET, IndyCar called time on the day.
Between the session, IndyCar made two hours available for new drivers to complete their Rookie Orientation Program runs and for returning veterans to conduct their refresher courses.
Marco Andretti, Katherine Legge, Pietro Fittipaldi, Christian Rasmussen, Nolan Siegel, and Kyffin Simpson all passed their respective tests and were cleared to run in the rest of the test and once practice begins in May for the Indy 500.
