Prep Roundup: Steamboat baseball defeats Rifle for first time in seven seasons

The Steamboat Springs baseball team split its doubleheader at Rifle on Saturday to maintain its .500 record.
The boys fell 12-2 in game one with just two hits, both off the bat of senior Jesse Hamric. Game two was a different story for the Sailors, who picked up 11 hits on their way to a dominating 10-2 win over the Rifle Bears.
Sophomore Fred Lohne pitched a two-hit gem, collecting eight strikeouts and walking just four in his seven innings of work. This was Steamboat’s first win over Rifle in seven years.
The team is now riding a 5-5 record and earned its first league win of the season, where it sits 1-5. Next up for the boys is a road doubleheader against Meeker on Wednesday.
Girls soccer takes two after four-game slip
Entering the week with an 0-3-1 record in its previous four, the Steamboat girls soccer team bounced back with wins over Glenwood Springs on Thursday and Battle Mountain on Saturday.
In Thursday’s game, six unique players scored goals, including two off the foot of sophomore Sadie Hartman to help the Sailors win 7-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Ella Wilson earned the shutout with four saves.
Senior Gwyn Jamison was the star of the game Saturday, scoring two goals and assisting on two more to help the Sailors take the 4-2 victory. Entering Tuesday morning, the team sat 4-4-2 on the season and 2-3-2 in league play.
The girls hosted Summit on Tuesday night and will take on Glenwood Springs again Thursday night, on the road.
Steamboat boys lacrosse takes second loss, sits third in the league
The Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse team suffered its second loss of the season Friday in a tight 9-8 game against Battle Mountain at home.
The boys followed up with an 11-6 victory to get back in the win column over Glenwood Springs on Monday on the road.
The team is currently ranked third in the 4A Western league at 4-1 and 6-2 in the overall season. It is back at home against Vail Mountain at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Steamboat girls lacrosse endures three-game skid
The Steamboat girls lacrosse team hit a speed bump in its season last week and is currently riding a three-game losing streak with a loss to Battle Mountain, sandwiched between two more losses against Roaring Fork.
During the losing streak, the girls were outscored 42-28. They have the opportunity to turn their recent misfortunes around on Thursday against Summit at home with a 4 p.m. game at Gardner Field.
Tigers, Rams dominate the field at Eagle Valley Invitational
The Eagle Valley Invitational served the Tigers and Rams well on Saturday, with both teams putting up quality results across several events.
The girls dominated field events for Hayden with freshman Ella Harris winning triple jump on her series of leaps to the 30-10.00 mark. Senior Jenna Kleckler was third in long jump, reaching 14-05.50. Dakota Munden, senior, placed second for the Tigers in both discus and shot put.
Soroco found three 3200 meter runners in the top-10 with Nick Clark and Alan Mayer taking third and fourth, respectively, in the boys race while Lupita Jaconetta finished fourth among the girls. Dash Duksa was seventh in discus at 104-02.50.
Larhae Whaley, senior, was just shy of the 300 meter hurdles podium, taking fourth in 51.45 seconds. She managed to find the podium in pole vault, reaching 8-06.00 for second.
Hayden and Steamboat Springs will next compete at a meet in Glenwood Springs on Saturday, while Soroco will send a handful of athletes to Denver for the Thomas Jefferson Twilight on Friday.
Steamboat girls golf swings to sixth at second tournament
A roster full of girls with prior commitments early in the season has put the Steamboat girls golf team in a challenging position a week into the year.
The Sailors competed in Gypsum on Wednesday, bringing just three girls from the roster. The team finished sixth overall in the field of eight schools.
Senior Catherine Larock took fourth for a second consecutive tournament and collected seven pars, including five on the back nine.
Sophomores Audrey Becker and Maddy Moline finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in the tournament. Becker managed a birdie on the par five second hole.
Next up for the Sailors is a tournament at Adobe Creek National Golf Course in Mesa County on Monday.

Sailors rally for regionals on the girls tennis court
Sophomores Lucia del Haya and Dylan Quinn were the lone Sailors to win matches for the Steamboat girls tennis team against Vail Christian on Friday.
Despite the 5-2 match loss, head coach Jason Scicchitano was very happy with how the team played and hopes it continues to go into matches with an aggressive play-style.
The Sailors have just a few more matches ahead of the regional tournament at the start of May. They will next travel to Glenwood Springs on Thursday for a tri meet.
