Back in June, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Kit Harington met with HBO to discuss a potential sequel series to Game of Thrones—one that would feature his character, Jon Snow—but nothing had been officially announced… until now. Well, sort of.

Though George R.R. Martin confirmed in a blog post this past summer that Harington pitched the idea for a spinoff titled SNOW, a new interview with Screen Rant marks the first time that the actor is speaking directly about the potential follow-up series. Sadly, it's not the official announcement fans were hoping for. "I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development," Harington said. "I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen."

Sure. We all knew about it anyway, though. So, just get to the bad news already! "Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,” Harington revealed. "So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf."

Damn. I guess A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms won whatever war happened at HBO headquarters.

Kit Harington reportedly pitched the Jon Snow spinoff to HBO himself.

Back in December 2022, Harington teased to Entertainment Weekly, “I think if you asked [Snow], he would've felt he got off lightly." Fans may recall that Jon Snow not only killed his aunt/lover, Daenerys, to save the realm from a mad queen, but he also kept his royal parentage a secret from Westeros as well. “At the end of the show when we find him in that cell, he's preparing to be beheaded and he wants to be. He's done,” Harington explained. “The fact he goes to the Wall is the greatest gift and also the greatest curse. He's gotta go back up to the place with all this history and live out his life thinking about how he killed Dany, and live out his life thinking about Ygritte dying in his arms, and live out his life thinking about how he hung Olly, and live out his life thinking about all of this trauma, and that… that’s interesting.”

“So, I think where we leave him at the end of the show, there's always this feeling of like… I think we wanted some kind of little smile that things are okay," the actor continued. "He’s not okay.” Sure, this could all be pure conjecture from Harington, but it is coming from the same man who may have pitched SNOW to HBO back in June. He also appeared to slip up when answering a question about the future for Jon Snow’s direwolf, Ghost. The actor responded, “I do think Ghost has a place in…,” before catching himself and cutting his answer short. “I think he, you know... I think there's... I don't know where I'm going with that.” Oh I think we know where he was going with that!

Luckily, fans of the series still have plenty of House of the Dragon ahead. HBO is also reportedly considering other spinoffs, including a story about Princess Nymeria (Ten Thousand Ships) in a series following the voyage of the young Sea Snake, Corlys Velaryon (House of the Dragon’s Steve Toussaint). For now, it's time to brush up on Dunk and Egg.
