    What's the story

Boji, a stray dog from Istanbul, has become a local sensation due to his unique daily routine. The dog travels up to 30 kilometers each day using the city's public transportation system, including ferries, trams, and subway cars. His story came to light when city officials noticed his regular use of public transport and began tracking his routes. A Getty Images photographer who followed Boji noted that the dog seems to have a fondness for travel.

    City's mascot

Boji's popularity soars among locals and tourists

Boji's daily adventures have endeared him to both locals and tourists in Istanbul. His escapades are widely shared on social media platforms, with many posting their experiences and photos of him. The dog's popularity has grown so much that he now has dedicated Twitter and Instagram accounts, boasting tens of thousands of followers. "Whenever he sees a bus, van, or any form of transport, he wants to get on it," the Getty Images photographer shared about Boji's love for commuting.

    Safety advocate

Boji: An unexpected champion for responsible commuting

Boji's popularity has led to him becoming an unexpected advocate for responsible commuting. Through his social media platforms, he promotes adherence to city safety regulations among public transport users. Commuters describe Boji as calm and well-mannered, always abiding by traffic rules and seldom breaching the yellow safety line at metro stations. His behavior sets a good example for other commuters, further enhancing his status as a beloved figure in the city.

    City's support

    Istanbul Municipality welcomes Boji's presence

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has embraced Boji, ensuring he receives all necessary vaccinations and equipping him with a GPS tracker to monitor his location. They've set up a cozy shelter for him at a metro station and ensure he's fed whenever he comes back. In 2022, businessman Omer Koc adopted Boji, providing him with a home where he can freely explore and play while still indulging in his occasional city tours.

    Global travels

    Boji's adventures extend beyond Istanbul

Boji's adventures are not limited to Istanbul. In March 2024, he was spotted in London with his owner, enjoying a ride on a London bus. His GPS data shows a preference for historic tram lines and regular subway rides. Erol, Boji's owner, emphasizes the dog's exemplary public transport manners—he patiently waits for passengers to alight before boarding the train. Through his unique lifestyle, Boji has become a symbol of Istanbul's inclusive spirit.
