Marks the release of “Walk Ride Paddle: A Life Outside” by Harper Horizon, authored by Tim Kaine, the Virginia Senator and one-time Democratic Vice-Presidential nominee. This book is a riveting narrative of Kaine’s extensive travels through Virginia’s wilderness, serving as both a personal odyssey and a hopeful ode to the American spirit. Kaine offers an unguarded look into his experiences during significant moments in history, sharing his reflections with candor and insight. His adept storytelling and profound observations provide a unique peek into the thoughts of an experienced politician with a passion for the great outdoors.
In 2019, to celebrate his sixtieth birthday and twenty-fifth anniversary in public service, Tim Kaine embarked on a remarkable journey across Virginia, engaging in hiking, biking, and canoeing. This adventure allowed him to ponder over his vice-presidential run and the implications of its outcome, set against the backdrop of tumultuous events like impeachment trials, the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice protests, and the January 6 Capitol attack.
“Walk Ride Paddle is my love letter to Virginia, the power of democracy, and the great outdoors,” said Senator Kaine.
Spanning several years, Kaine took to the 1,228-mile Virginia Nature Triathlon on weekends and Senate recesses. His trek included hiking the Appalachian Trail’s 559-mile stretch across Virginia, cycling 321 miles along the Virginia Blue Ridge, and canoeing the 348-mile length of the James River. Through his journey, Kaine muses on personal and global events, expressing his profound connection to nature and the urgency of its conservation. His memoir intertwines adventure, reflection, and political analysis, presenting a unique and hopeful take on significant historical moments.
“I didn’t know when I set out on my Virginia Nature Triathlon that by the time I finished, I’d be a juror in two impeachment trials, in the Capitol when it was attacked on January 6, experience a global pandemic, and witness the racial justice protests that resulted from the murder of George Floyd. The events of the world were weighty,” said Kaine “Being out in nature gave me a way to reflect on and process them. I hope everyone who reads Walk Ride Paddle gains insight and inspiration from Virginia’s great outdoors and will fight to preserve our country’s natural beauty.”
“Walk Ride Paddle” is now available for purchase in hardcover, eBook, and audiobook formats, featuring narration by Kaine himself. Signed copies are obtainable at various locations during Senator Kaine’s book tour, with stops including:
