A Status Yellow rain warning is in place for six counties as heavy rain could lead to flooding in Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Waterford and Cork.

Heavy rain is expected, bringing with it the chance of poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions in the impacted counties.

It will remain in effect until midnight.

The alert for Cork will come into force at 1pm today and last until 10pm.

Met Éireann forecasts rain and drizzle that will continue to push northwards to most areas during the afternoon and early afternoon, but it will remain largely dry in some western coastal counties with just a few showers.

The rain will continue throughout the day across the midlands, south and east.

It will be heaviest in the southeast where flooding will be likely.

Winds will increase throughout the day and will become strong along southern coasts.

Temperatures have cooled, with highs of only 5 to 10 degrees expected today and lows of 2 to 6 degrees overnight.

Rain will remain over the east coast tonight but will clear slowly into the Irish Sea.

Tomorrow will see some showers, though the day will be generally dry with some sunny spells.

Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees are expected.

In the coming days, Met Éireann forecasts milder conditions but it will remain unsettled.

Wednesday will see “dull, misty and wet” conditions with outbreaks of rain or drizzle continuing for much of the day.

Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees are expected.

It will remain dry on Thursday with sunny spells broken by just a few showers, though cloud will increase from the southwest with rain moving into the west of the country by the evening.

Further outbreaks of rain will be heaviest in the northwest with patchy rain and drizzle elsewhere, Met Éireann forecasts.

The following days look likely to become cooler with further spells of rain and showers for the coming days.
