Gardaí probe alleged assault on teenage girl in Longford as boy (17) remains in ICU following alleged gang attack

Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault on a young girl in Edgeworthtstown, barely 24 hours before a teenage boy was left in a serious condition in hospital after he was attacked at the mid Longford town's train station on Saturday afternoon.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into an alleged assault on a teenage girl in county Longford.

The Irish Independent website understands gardaí are probing the circumstances of an incident that took place in the Bracklin Road area of Edgeworthstown last Thursday.

The alleged scene of the incident was sealed off for a number of hours on Friday to allow for a technical examination to be carried out.

Gardaí have stopped short of commenting any further on the precise nature of the incident, but confirmed an investigation was underway.

“Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault that is reported to have occurred on Thursday, April 4 in Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford,” said a garda spokesperson

“Investigations are ongoing. No further information is available at this time.”

Details surrounding the alleged incident comes as gardaí continue to investigate a serious assault on Saturday afternoon that left a teenage boy in intensive care in hospital.

The alleged incident took place close to Edgeworthstown’s Train Station at around 3pm.

The Irish Independent website understands the alleged victim who is 17 and has learning difficulties remains in a serious condition in Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital.

Medics, who treated the youngster for a bleed on the brain as well as a fractured jaw, initially brought him to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital before his condition deteriorated which prompted his transfer.

It’s understood he remains in a serious condition in the Dublin hospital’s Intensive Care Unit department.
