Across New York State, from New York City to Upstate New York, preparations are underway for observing the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, with a series of special events.
Eclipse Events in the Path of Totality
- Niagara Falls is set to be a prime location for the eclipse, with NASA having initiated special programs there in the weeks leading up to the event. The climax of these celebrations will be a fireworks display sponsored by Wegmans. Additionally, Wegmans plans to close around 50 of its stores in the eclipse’s path of totality for 30 minutes at the peak time to allow its employees to view the eclipse.
- In Rochester, a three-day festival named Rock the Eclipse is being organized. Debra Ross, leading the Rochester Eclipse Task Force, mentioned that local establishments like hotels, museums, breweries, restaurants, and bars are all set to host events and activities related to the eclipse.
- Attendees are being encouraged to extend their stay with the suggestion of “Take Tuesday Too,” implying taking an additional day off to stay another night, especially since leaving immediately after the eclipse might be complicated due to the NCAA Championship Game occurring on Monday night, leading to many hotels organizing watch parties.
Additional Events Across New York
- Events are listed on the state’s I Love NY tourism site, spanning from the Chautauqua region along Lake Eerie, through the Finger Lakes, to the Adirondacks. Viewing opportunities include from the slopes at Gore Mountain or Whiteface Mountain, a scenic train ride on the A&A Railroad, or for the more adventurous, a skydive at Skydive the Falls.
- Tupper Lake will host family-friendly festivals with live demonstrations and music at The Wild Center and the Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory.
- For those seeking a communal experience, NBT Bank Stadium will welcome thousands of spectators. Alternatively, Lake Eerie Wine Country and Seneca Lake offer more secluded spots for viewing.
Solar Eclipse Events in NYC
- Though New York City is outside the path of totality, the moon will cover about 90% of the sun. Iconic landmarks, including the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center, The Edge at Hudson Yards, and the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, are hosting special events.
- The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the New York Hall of Science are organizing educational activities with experts in astronomy.
- The Parks Department will hold free watch parties in all five boroughs, with additional events at Shirley Chisholm State Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which offers free community viewing with eclipse glasses provided by Warby Parker.
- Viewing options also include a cruise with Classic Harbor Line and a gong-bath at Green-Wood Cemetery.
Distribution of “I Love NY” Eclipse Glasses
- The New York Governor announced the distribution of limited edition “I Love NY” eclipse glasses at 30 locations across the state to ensure viewers can safely watch the eclipse.
- It is emphasized that proper eye protection is crucial when viewing the eclipse to prevent permanent damage, with a reminder to ensure eclipse glasses are from a trusted source.
