GLENDALE, Ariz. — As the UConn men have been knocking off opponents in the Big East and NCAA Tournaments, coach Dan Hurley and his assistants have been rewarded with bonuses each step of the way.
Hurley signed a six-year, $32.1 million contract last June, greatly upgrading his original deal, worth $3 million annually, signed in 2018 to make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country and the highest-paid State of Connecticut employee.
UConn head coach Dan Hurley signs new six-year, $32.1 million contract
As defending champion, Hurley’s annual income was brought in line with coaches signing new contracts around the country and, typical for the industry, his contract included a schedule of performance bonuses for Hurley and his assistant coaches.
According to the contract, Hurley receives a base salary of $400,000 for the 2023-24 academic year, plus “supplemental” salary of $4.1 million and a “retention bonus” of $500,000, so actual base earnings is $5 million for the season. So far, he has qualified for $1.25 million in bonuses for the Huskies’ performance.

Still to come:
If the program has a graduation success rate of 100 percent, a max bonus of $100,000 is due. It’s $25,000 for a rate in the 70s, $50,000 if in the 80s, $75,000 in the 90s. In the data released last December, the UConn men had a four-year graduation rate of 89 percent.
There is a similar schedule for Academic Progress Rate scores. A one-year APR score of 970-89 carries a $25,000 bonus, 980-89 is $50,000, 990-99 is $75,000 and a perfect 100 score is $100,000. Last May, the UConn men posted a perfect 1,000 score for the 2021-22 academic year.
For assistants:
Hurley’s contract also calls for a graduated schedule of bonuses for assistants. In reaching the national championship game, the clause has maxed out at $500,000 to be distributed at the discretion of Hurley and AD David Benedict among the assistants.
For Dan Hurley’s assistants, the present at UConn is special, their futures could be even brighter
