Offshore drilling services provider Transocean Ltd. has secured a contract extension for one of its rigs, Deepwater Asgard, having been tapped by an independent operator in the United States Gulf of Mexico.

The contract gets an additional 365 days, with the new program expected to commence in June 2024 in direct continuation of the rig’s current program with additional services, Transocean said in a press release.

According to Transocean’s Fleet Status Update issued in February, Deepwater Asgard was raking in $440,000 per day under its contract with Hess Corp., which has three one-year extension options agreed in the initial contract from September 2022.

The total contract value of approximately $195 million includes a $10.9 million lump sum payment, which was not included in the estimated backlog of approximately $184 million, the company said in the media release.

Transocean said that as of February 14, 2024, its total backlog stood at approximately $9 billion.

Deepwater Asgard is one of 36 mobile offshore drilling units operated by Transocean. It is a DSME 12000 ultra-deepwater drillship. Transocean operates 28 ultra-deepwater units and has one ultra-deepwater drillship currently under construction.
