Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough dies at age 73

Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough has died at 73 years old, several Chicago-area media outlets have reported.

Yarbrough's top communications aide confirmed she died Sunday, according to ABC 7.

Yarbrough had been hospitalized in critical condition with an officially undisclosed illness, ABC 7 reported Tuesday.

Yarbrough was midway through her term as clerk and was the first woman and African American to hold that office. She had previously served as a long-time state representative and county recorder of deeds.
