    What's the story

Embarking on the journey of pet ownership is an exciting and rewarding experience, but for beginners, it can also be challenging. With so many options available, selecting the right pet that fits your lifestyle, preferences, and capabilities is crucial. Let's explore five top picks for low-maintenance pets, as revealed by professional aquarist and pet enthusiast Minnie B. Miller

    Betta Fish

    Beauty in a bowl

Smaller creatures like betta fish are often recommended for beginners for their affordability, simplicity of care, and stunning appearance. They require minimal space and modest habitat setups compared to other pets. However, betta fish have short lifespans and shouldn't be housed with other fish due to their aggressive behavior, as noted by Miller.

    Shelter dogs or cats

    Adopt an older pet

According to the expert, for first-time pet owners, adopting an older cat or dog from a rescue center is advisable. Older pets are often already trained, easing the transition. Senior animals may come with financial benefits like reduced fees. Shelter animals undergo vet checks, guaranteeing their health. However, be prepared for possible medical or behavioral issues, which should be discussed with shelter staff beforehand.

    Gerbils and hamsters

    Pocket friends

Gerbils are budget-friendly, friendly pets, although requiring daily exercise and occasionally chewing items, demanding more upkeep. Hamsters, adorable and low-maintenance, need minimal space and can live up to three years. However, they're nocturnal, so avoid keeping them in your bedroom. Miller suggests considering budgies, cockatiels, mice, hamsters, or rabbits, advising thorough research and consulting with experienced pet owners for the best fit.

    Guinea pigs

    Piggy pals

Guinea pigs, social creatures, benefit from daily interaction and companionship, often preferring the company of their own kind. Miller reveals their grooming is minimal, as they naturally keep themselves clean, seldom needing baths. Proper care entails providing a suitable cage, appropriate bedding, and ensuring a consistent supply of food and water. They love munching on crunchy treats like carrots, bell peppers, and cucumbers.

    Turtle

    Shell buddy

Various turtle species vary in lifespan, size, and care needs, shares Miller. Painted Turtle, a favored option, grows to be between 4 and 12 inches long. They thrive in terrariums, requiring feeding only several times weekly, reducing daily upkeep. Crucially, their optimal health hinges on a well-maintained aquatic environment, necessitating careful management of habitat temperature and cleanliness, emphasizes Miller.
