4 killed in wrong-way crash on I-440 West Saturday morning in Raleigh

I-440 West closed for several hours after wrong-way driver causes crash

Four people were killed in a crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 440 West in Raleigh.

At 2:21 a.m., the Raleigh Police Department responded to a crash on I-440 westbound near Capital Boulevard.

The crash involved two cars, according to the police.

They confirmed that four people were involved in the incident, with no survivors.

Police say a man was operating a 2013 Honda Civic, with a woman in the front passenger seat and a man in the back passenger seat were traveling the wrong-way on eastbound on I-440 westbound near Capital Boulevard.

The second vehicle, a 2018 Honda Accord, was driven by a woman traveling straight ahead and was struck by the Honda Civic.

“440 Westbound and Wake Forest road, be on the lookout for a wrong-way driver on 440 Westbound. Newer model sedan, unknown make and model. Traveling east in the westbound lanes,” a dispatcher said on the Broadcastify radio traffic.

The crash is currently being investigated. I-440 westbound was closed between Brentwood Road and Capital Boulevard for about five hours, but the road is now open.
