WATERBURY – Penelope (Krallis) Unaris, 93, of Waterbury, was reunited with her husband in Heaven on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at her home in Waterbury. She was the beloved wife of the late George John Unaris, who predeceased her in 1979.
Penelope was born in Kliou, on the island of Lesvos, Greece, on Oct. 10, 1930, a daughter of the late Konstantine and Anastasia Krallis. Being one of six children, Penelope grew up in Greece during the battles of World War II, and on April 1, 1955, was the only one of her siblings to immigrate to the United States.
In November of 1955, Penelope married her husband George in the original Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Maple Street in Waterbury.
Penelope was a simple woman but lived a full life. She was an excellent cook and baker, and was generous to everyone. She was a devoted Orthodox Christian and a longtime parishioner of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Waterbury, and a proud and devoted yiayia to her two grandsons.
Penelope leaves behind to cherish her memory her two daughters, Presv. Anastasia Katsoulis and her husband the Rev. Protopresbyter John C. Katsoulis, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Georgia Unaris of Waterbury. She also leaves behind her two beloved grandsons, John George Katsoulis and Konstantine N. Katsoulis, both of Virginia, as well as other family members in Greece and the United States.
A traditional Greek Orthodox funeral service will be on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, noon at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 937 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. Burial will follow at Old Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury. There are no calling hours. Anyone wishing to attend the service for Penelope is asked to meet directly at the church on Tuesday.
