The Legends of Aspen film series, a joint project of the Pitkin County Library and the Aspen Hall of Fame, will be wrapping up its historical film series with a final screening of six films at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, in the Dunaway Community Room at the library.
The lives and community contributions of past Aspen Hall of Fame inductees Tony Vagneur, Bruce Gordon, Dick Durrance, Gretl Uhl, Carolyn and Tom Moore, and Franz Berko will be featured in the final screening.
The film series is free and open to the public. Children are encouraged to come to learn about Aspen’s history through the lives of people who helped shape the town and make it the special place it is.
New this year is a “live stream” on Sunday, April 14, at the Limelight hotel in Aspen of the 2024 induction banquet. Mike Kaplan, former CEO of the Aspen Skiing Company; Charlie Hopton, a founder of Mountain Rescue Aspen and the Western Slopes Veterans Coalition and a long-time volunteer for many local organizations; and Mary Ryerson, president of Alpine Bank in Aspen and an active volunteer for many Aspen events and groups will be formally inducted at the annual Aspen Hall of Fame banquet at the Hotel Jerome.
Members of the public who were unable to get tickets for the sold-out banquet can watch the evening’s events live at the Limelight or in the comfort of their homes on the Aspen Hall of Fame’s Youtube channel. The Aspen chapter of Rotary has funded the live stream through its Community Grants program. Additional funding for the videos has come from the City of Aspen, the Aspen Thrift Shop, Alpine Bank, the AABC Foundation, SkiCo, and numerous individual and family donors.
The Aspen Hall of Fame has been celebrating notable locals since the first event was held in January 1987 as part of the SkiCo’s 40th anniversary celebration. The original concept was to honor the “pioneers” of Aspen who dedicated their lives to the development of skiing and the betterment of the community. Since the first banquet in 1987, over 100 individuals have been recognized for their significant and lasting impact on the Aspen/Snowmass communities by demonstrating excellence and leadership in sports, civic activities, culture, or philanthropy.
