As Chapter 4 of the California election code mandates, county elections offices must perform a series of post-election canvassing activities to validate the accuracy of election results. This includes conducting a manual tally, or hand count of randomly selected ballots.
For the recent primary, the Placer County Elections Office hand-counted nearly 7,500 ballots, representing more than 5% of all ballots cast in the county. The canvass results demonstrated that the elections equipment counted the ballots correctly.
Completing the legally required canvass is an important step to ensure the integrity of the elections.
Community members interested in learning more about election canvassing can contact the Placer County Elections Office by visiting 3715 Atherton Road in Rocklin, calling (800) 824-8683, or emailing election@placer.ca.gov.
