Prep Roundup: Sailors, Rams fly at Mickey Dunn track and field Invitational

The Steamboat Springs and Soroco track and field teams met at the Mickey Dunn Invitational on Saturday in Grand Junction. 

Steamboat juniors Austin Prost and Wrigs Neeley managed a fourth and fifth finish, respectively, in the 110 meter hurdles with Prost later landing a podium spot in the 300 meter hurdles, taking second overall in 40.33 seconds. 

Brandon Kolb, junior, was once again a high jump champion, being the only competitor to break the 6-foot mark. 



Freshman Antigone Loomis reached 32-11 in the long jump pit for fourth. Whitney Warnke, freshman, managed a fifth-place finish in the 400 meter dash at 1:05.28. 

Soroco’s Daisy Hoff, senior, was the Rams’ most successful discus thrower, reaching 91-09 for sixth. 



Both Alan Mayer, senior, and Ava Elshere, sophomore, placed seventh for the boys and girls, respectively, in pole vault. Mayer vaulted to 10-03 with Elshere at 6-09. 

Steamboat, Hayden and Soroco will all compete at the Eagle Valley Invitational on Saturday. 

Steamboat soccer still in search of first league win
The Sailors fell behind early in the girls soccer game on Monday against Eagle Valley, and despite a second half surge, the team lost 3-2 at home. 

A few days prior, the team also lost on the road against Mead, 2-0, on Saturday. 

The girls are now 2-4-2 on the season and are still awaiting their first league victory, currently sitting at 0-3-2. Glenwood Springs comes to town Thursday night for a chance at the Sailors first league win.

Girls lacrosse has double-digit goal scorers Saturday
It was another dominant win for Steamboat Springs girls lacrosse, which earned a 17-5 win over Conifer at home on Saturday. 

Eleven unique players scored at least one goal in the game, as freshman Julia Sturges led the way with four of her own. 

Steamboat took a 6-1 record, 3-1 in league, into Tuesday night’s game against Roaring Fork, and will have another contest on Thursday against Battle Mountain on the road. 

Steamboat boys lacrosse falls for the first time
Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday at Gardner Field.

The Sailors were on a roll to start the season, winning their first four counting games of the year — including a 15-1 victory over Thompson Valley on Saturday. 

Inviting Cheyenne Mountain to town, Steamboat was faced with a tough test against a team coming off a state championship season. The Sailors played tough, but were unable to to come out on top, leading to an 11-9 loss. 

The Sailors, now 4-1 on the season, look to get back in the win column Wednesday night on the road against Aspen.

Larock starts hot with fourth at golf tournament 
The Steamboat Springs girls golf team opened its regular season Monday at a tournament in Grand Junction, held at Bookcliff Country Club. 

Only three Sailors from the team of 16 were able to compete in the tournament due to prior athletic commitments and injuries, but the girls managed to place eighth in the tournament of 11 teams. 

Steamboat’s lone senior, Catherine Larock, led the charge for the Sailors and placed fourth in the tournament with an 87, including a birdie on the par 3 fifth hole. 

Sophomores Maddy Moline and Brynn Becker took 17th and 46th respectively, shooting 100 and 117. 

The girls will be back on the greens Wednesday at the Gypsum Creek Tournament. 

Senior wins final tennis match before trip abroad
Among the slew of Steamboat Springs athletes competing in Grand Junction over the weekend was the girls tennis team, which was faced with matches against Delta and Cedaredge on Saturday. 

The girls dominated from top to bottom, taking down both opponents 6-1. 

The highlight of the weekend came from senior Grace Brice, who filled in at the No. 1 singles slot against Cedaredge and closed out her high school tennis career with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Brice will miss the remainder of the season due to an international trip as part of Steamboat Mountain School’s global studies program. 

The Sailors return home for a match against Vail on Friday at the Steamboat Tennis Center. Matches begin at 2 p.m. 

Sailors baseball stunned in Palisade, can rebound against Moffat County
Since its dominant start to the season, the Steamboat Springs baseball team has struggled in consecutive doubleheaders, and has fallen to 2-4, 0-4 on the season. 

On Saturday, the Sailors took two losses on the road against Palisade, dropping the first game 15-5 and the second game 23-0. 

Steamboat will have a chance to get back to a .500 record in its doubleheader against U.S. 40 rival Moffat County on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
