The Accountant, Gavin O’Connor’s action thriller starring Ben Affleck, surprisingly reached No. 1 on this week’s chart. On the Line, a little-seen thriller starring Mel Gibson, leaped to No. 2, with Mending the Line at No. 3. Two Netflix originals, Heart of the Hunter and The Wages of Fear, debuted at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. 10. The Wages of Fear (2024)
There is a new version of The Wages of Fear, a remake of one of the best French thrillers of all time from 1953. In the 2024 version, directed and co-written by Julien Leclercq, The Wages of Fear stars Alban Lenoir, Franck Gastambide, Ana Girardot, and Sofiane Zermani. In the desert, an oil well goes up in flames, threatening the population of a nearby refugee camp.
The company that owns the well decides that the only way to prevent the explosion is to detonate the well with nitroglycerin within 24 hours. A small team must transport the nitroglycerin to the well. If they succeed, it will result in a huge payday. However, the trip will be difficult, as the rough terrain is swarmed with hostiles and rebels. It’s a race against time in this edge-of-your-seat thriller.
9. Heart of the Hunter (2024)
A retired assassin is forced back into action when a conspiracy threatens the South African government in the new action thriller, Heart of the Hunter. Zuko Khumalo (Bonko Khoza) has been living a quiet life as a motorcycle mechanic since leaving his life as an assassin. Zuko lives with his girlfriend, Malime (Masasa Mbangeni), and her son, Paka (Boleng Mogotsi).
Suddenly, Zuko’s past returns with the arrival of Johnny Klein (Peter Butler), a disgraced politician who needs help uncovering information about corruption in the South African government. The damning information can be traced to presidential candidate Daza Mtima (Sisanda Henna). It’s a dangerous mission, as the director of the Presidential Intelligence Agency, Mo (Connie Ferguson), tracks Zuko’s moves. There’s no turning back, as Zuko must succeed or face death.
8. Shirley (2024)
In 1968, Shirley Chisholm (Watchmen’s Regina King) became the first Black woman elected to Congress and a member the U.S. House of Representatives. Chisholm’s ambition did not stop there. In 1972, Chisholm made a historic run for president, becoming the first black woman to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination.
With the campaign slogan, “Unbought and Unbossed,” the trailblazing politician fought to serve working-class people instead of the wealthy. Directed by Academy Award-winner John Ridley, Shirley chronicles Chisholm’s rise as a political pioneer and how she overcame the odds to become a beacon of hope and an inspiration for future politicians.
7. Irish Wish (2024)
Lindsay Lohan heads to Europe in the new Netflix romantic comedy, Irish Wish. Maddie Kelly (Lohan) edits the work of author Paul Kennedy (Alexander Vlahos). What Paul doesn’t know is that Maddie secretly loves him. Unfortunately for Maddie, her dream of landing Paul ends when he gets engaged to her best friend, Emma (Elizabeth Tan). Somehow, it gets worse for Maddie when Emma asks her to be a bridesmaid at their wedding in Ireland.
While sitting by a special bench in Ireland, Maddie wishes for Paul to marry her. Much to her surprise, the wish comes true, and Maddie gets to marry the love of her life. Yet, Maddie slowly learns a valuable lesson: Be careful what you wish for. You can’t make someone love you, especially if your soulmate is someone else.
6. Damsel (2024)
As the poster states, “This is not a fairytale.” Millie Bobby Brown is a young woman thrust into the battle for her life in Damsel. Elodie (Brown), a young, respectable woman, agrees to marry Prince Henry (Nick Robinson) from the island of Aurea. After their wedding, Elodie is asked to participate in an ancient ritual on top of the mountains to celebrate their marriage.
However, the meeting is a trap, as Henry throws Elodie into a cave home to a fire-breathing dragon. The wedding was a sham, as Henry’s family needed to sacrifice a woman to repay a debt. Motivated by revenge, Elodie won’t go quietly into the night, fighting to survive and reunite with her family. Clearly, Prince Henry messed with the wrong damsel.
5. The Miracle Club (2023)
It’s 1967 in Ballygar, Ireland, and friends Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) seek a temporary escape from domestic life. They have their hopes set on winning a trip to Lourdes, a sacred French town where miracles happen. With a little assistance from the local priest, the ladies win the trip at their local raffle night.
Before the group travels to Lourdes, their old friend, Chrissie (Laura Linney), arrives in Ballygar for her mother’s funeral. The trio invites Chrissie to tag along on their trip, as each woman hopes their miracle will happen upon arrival. However, the women didn’t expect the trip to become a therapy session as they confronted their complicated histories as friends.
4. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Thanks to NBCUniversal’s deal with Netflix, one of the biggest titles of 2023 – The Super Mario Bros. Movie – is available to stream. Based on the hit characters from the Nintendo games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an origin story for Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), two Italian-American brothers working as plumbers in Brooklyn, New York.
While fixing a water main leak, the two brothers are sent down the Warp Pipe into two kingdoms. Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), while Luigi appears in the Dark Lands ruled by Bowser (Jack Black). Featuring other notable characters like Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), Mario sets out to find Luigi and save the world from Bowser’s reign.
3. Mending the Line (2023)
Survivor’s guilt, PTSD, and war trauma are the themes of Stephen Camelio’s 2022 drama, Mending the Line. After an injury in Afghanistan, Marine John Colter (Sinqua Walls) is sent to the United States to recover at a V.A. facility. Like many soldiers, Colter suffers from PTSD as the memories of his fallen comrades haunt him. Colter constantly questions why he survived and not his friends.
While at the Montana facility, Colter meets Ike Fletcher (Brian Cox), a Vietnam veteran who now works as a photographer and librarian. Fletcher knows what it’s like to return home from war and battle physical and emotional injuries. Fletcher takes Colter under his wing and teaches him to fly fish, which becomes a therapeutic activity for the former Marine. It won’t be easy to overcome the horrors faced in Afghanistan, but Colter slowly learns that he doesn’t have to do it alone.
2. On the Line (2022)
In the obscure 2022 movie On the Line, Elvis Cooney (Mel Gibson) is a Los Angeles radio host with a flair for controversy. The humorous and offensive host loves to stir things up on the midnight shift at the radio station. One night, Elvis receives a call from a mysterious man named Gary (Paul Spera), who claims to be at Elvis’s house.
When Elvis attempts to end the call, Gary threatens to kill Elvis’s wife, Olivia (Nancy Tate), and daughter. Gary now has Elvis’ attention, and the radio host will do anything to save his family. Elvis must comply with Gary’s requests to keep his family alive, even if it ruins his reputation and relationships. After Gary says he will blow up the radio station, it’s up to Elvis to find his stalker before he and everyone he loves dies.
1. The Accountant (2016)
No one computes numbers better than Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a gifted accountant who happens to be on the autism spectrum. Wolff is also a highly skilled marksman and elite hand-to-hand combat specialist. Wolff uses a small accounting office in Illinois to serve as a coverup for his intricate money laundering empire, where he helps criminal organizations with their financials. However, Wolff takes on a legitimate job: to audit Living Robotics after a financial inconsistency reveals an embezzlement scheme.
Meanwhile, Treasury Director Ray King (J.K. Simmons) enlists the help of Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to find “The Accountant,” Wolff’s codename. After Wolff makes a startling discovery, he becomes a marked man, forcing him to fight for survival.
