A man who suffered serious injuries in an assault in west Dublin over the weekend has died in hospital.

Two men, who are both Croatian nationals, were assaulted in Clondalkin on Saturday night.

One of the men (31) suffered catastrophic head injuries and lost several teeth after being targeted in the Grange View Way area shortly after 10pm.

The man had remained in a critical condition in Tallaght Hospital before he lost his fight for life yesterday.

It is understood he was attacked just yards from where he had been living in Clondalkin. He has been named locally as Croatian national Josip Strok.

It is understood that family members of Mr Strok’s were in Tallaght Hospital yesterday when the life-support machine was turned off.

Friends have been paying tribute to Mr Strok on social media.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí at Clondalkin continue to investigate a serious assault that took place in Clondalkin, Dublin 22, on Saturday, March 30.

“A man in his 30s, who sustained serious injuries during the incident, was pronounced deceased at Tallaght Hospital earlier today, Wednesday, April 3.

“An incident room has been set up at Clondalkin garda station, with a senior investigating officer (SIO) overseeing the investigation.”

Gardaí said no arrests have yet been made as they issued an appeal for information.

“Gardaí are specifically urging passengers who travelled on the number 13 Dublin Bus from Clondalkin on Saturday, March 30, between 9pm and 10pm to come forward, especially those who disembarked at the bus stop on St Cuthbert’s Road and proceeded towards Grange View Road,” added the spokesperson.

“Additionally, investigating gardaí are seeking information from anyone who was in the Tower Road area of Clondalkin between 9.30pm and 10.15pm, or in the Grange View Way area between 10pm and 10.30pm.

“Individuals who possess camera footage (including dash cam) of these areas on the evening of the incident are urged to provide this footage to the investigating gardaí.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Clondalkin garda station on 01 666 7600, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

It is believed the victims had been socialising in Dublin city centre on Saturday afternoon before returning to the Clondalkin area. It is thought they were involved in a verbal altercation with a group outside a store in the Tower Road area before getting on a bus and travelling to Grange View Way.

Shortly after arriving in the housing estate they were set upon by a gang of four men and subjected to a vicious assault. Detectives had been investigating if the two men were followed to where the attack happened, or if another altercation near the scene led to them being targeted.
