11:45 a.m. update: The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for most of the region now through Wednesday afternoon, given the potential for multiple waves of showers and thunderstorms, especially tonight and tomorrow.

“One to two inches of rain is most likely, with localized amounts up to 4 inches possible," the Weather Service said. “This may result in flooding of small streams and creeks. Flash flooding is possible.”

Southern zones, including Stafford, Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert counties are not included in the flood watch, but could be added later.

Today’s daily digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

3/10: Yes, okay, we’re getting our needed April showers, but we’re seemingly power-washing these flowers.

Express forecast

  • Today: Occasional showers, maybe a thunderstorm. Highs: 50s to near 60.
  • Tonight: Scattered showers and storms. Some could be heavy. Lows: Near 50.
  • Tomorrow: Numerous showers likely, thunderstorms possible. Highs: Mid-50s to low 60s.

Forecast in detail

Our weather pattern continues to be clogged by a slow-moving area of low pressure that could linger even into the weekend. Today and tomorrow bring our highest rain chances, but some showers are still possible Thursday. A shower or two could even linger into the weekend. We will have a hard time shaking the clouds the next several days as we stay cool and become breezy at times as well.

Today (Tuesday): Patchy fog this morning and cloudy skies throughout the day. Scattered showers are likely this morning with a thunderstorm possible. We could see fewer showers during the afternoon, but a shower or storm is still possible at just about any time. Most of us only reach highs in the 50s because of a cool breeze from the east-southeast at 5 to 10 mph. Areas to the south and southwest of D.C., especially toward Fredericksburg and Culpeper, could get to near 60 or the low 60s and may see a stronger thunderstorm. Confidence: Low-Medium

Tonight: Scattered showers and a thunderstorm are possible during the evening, with some heavier showers and storms becoming likely late evening and overnight. Otherwise cloudy with lows in the upper 40s to low 50s and light winds from the east. Patchy fog could develop overnight as well. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Wednesday): This looks like the rainiest day of the bunch. The morning could start with patchy fog as we see showers and thunderstorms much of the day. Highs range from the mid-50s to low 60s under continued cloudy skies. Winds pick up from the east late in the day, increasing to 10 to 15 mph with gusts near 20 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Scattered showers could linger into the evening, then should diminish overnight. Breezy conditions continue as temperatures turn cooler late at night with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s. Confidence: Medium

A look ahead

Thursday should be partly to mostly cloudy with scattered showers possible. Some showers could see graupel or wet snow mixed in, especially in northern to western areas. Highs stall in the mid- to upper 50s with a gusty breeze making it feel even cooler. Mixed skies on a colder and still breezy Thursday night with lows in the mid-30s to near 40. Confidence: Low-Medium

Friday looks to be our coldest day of the week with partly sunny morning skies becoming partly to mostly cloudy by afternoon. A light shower or two is possible, and winds are rather breezy with highs in the low to mid-50s. Friday night is on the chilly side again with lows in the 30s to near 40. Confidence: Low-Medium

The first weekend of April continues to be cool and somewhat breezy. Some morning sunshine is possible each day, followed by increasing midday to afternoon clouds. A few light showers are still possible, especially on Saturday. Highs aim for the mid-50s Saturday and mid-50s to near 60 on Sunday. Saturday night keeps the chill going with lows in the 30s to near 40. Confidence: Low-Medium
