Three men have been arrested and charged after Prince George’s County police say an officer shot one of them following an attempted robbery at a store in District Heights on Thursday.

The men are Edward Leroy Brown, 24, Kanard Bishop, 26 and Kahlill Boyd, 18, all are from the District, police said. Brown and Bishop are both charged with armed robbery and related counts. They are being held without bond at the county jail.

Police have obtained an arrest warrant for Boyd on armed robbery and related charges, police said. Boyd was taken into custody in D.C.

Police said in a news release that “additional charges are anticipated against the suspects as the investigation into the incident and the initial carjacking continue.”

Police Chief Malik Aziz said Thursday that detectives conducting surveillance on a carjacked car in the 5700 block of Silver Hill Road at around 3:05 p.m. saw two males exit the car wearing masks and enter a GameStop store.

Police said the car was carjacked at gunpoint Wednesday on Brooks Drive in District Heights.

Aziz said that detectives followed the two into a store, and saw the pair behind the counter. After police announced themselves, he said, the suspects ran out the back of the store and into the parking lot. While in the parking lot, one detective fired their service weapon, striking one of the suspects in the lower body. The second suspect was caught and taken into custody, Aziz said.

In a news release Friday, police said officers on the perimeter of the building saw both suspects running with guns. Brown, one of the suspects, “ran toward one detective who discharged his duty weapon striking Brown in the lower body,” police said. Officers rendered aid and Brown was taken to a hospital, police said. Brown has since been released from the hospital.

Aziz did not say how many people were in the store, but did say there was a worker who was “alarmed” to see two masked individuals attempt to rob the store. No civilians were injured, Aziz said.

Police recovered two guns in the parking lot.

A third suspect, whom police identified as Boyd, who had remained in the carjacked car, fled the scene after ramming an unmarked police vehicle. No officers were injured, Aziz said.

Aziz said the officer who fired their weapon will be placed on administrative duty as the investigation is conducted, as is standard procedure. Prince George’s County police said the officer is assigned to the department’s bureau of investigation and joined the agency in 2010.

Officers from the police department’s Carjacking Interdiction unit and the Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement unit had been working throughout the area to combat a rise in carjackings. , Aziz said.

“We don’t know what would have happened to the worker who was inside this business while these individuals were conducting a robbery,” Aziz said. “If you carjack a person with a weapon and take their vehicle, the injuries don’t have to be physical. It can be traumatic.”

Aziz said the investigation remains active.

It was not immediately clear whether Brown, Bishop or Boyd has an attorney.
