The railway company RegioJet, a member of ALLRAIL, has initiated the inaugural Open Access passenger rail service that is fully commercial and connects the EU with Ukraine. This groundbreaking service operates entirely without the need for government subsidies and promises a daily schedule for travel in both directions.
This venture introduces a night train equipped with both sleeper options—including couchettes and private compartments—as well as standard seating arrangements. This establishes a novel, direct, long-haul connection linking the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Ukraine.
The maiden journey for this service commenced from Prague yesterday evening at 21:52 CET (22:52 UKR time), making its way through Košice in Slovakia, and is anticipated to reach its endpoint in Chop, Ukraine, shortly – expected at around 10:35 UKR time (09:35 CET).
Chop serves as a crucial junction for passenger trains, and passengers can look forward to seamless connections to further services provided by Ukrainian Railways.
In a significant move to support this new route, RegioJet, which is privately held, plans to reinvest its resources into enhancing the infrastructure at the Chop railway station. The company’s founder, Radim Jančura, describes this investment as a gesture of goodwill towards the people of Ukraine.
ALLRAIL’s Armand Duthil says: “Two years after the unprovoked invasion by Russia, it is important to now enhance cross-border connectivity – with the aim that one day soon, Ukraine will join the Single European Railway Area”.
