POTSDAM, N.Y. — The Skidmore College men’s lacrosse team emerged victorious against Clarkson University in a nail-biting overtime showdown. The game ended with Brian Gonsalves making a spectacular unassisted goal two minutes and 35 seconds into overtime, securing a crucial Liberty League road victory for the Thoroughbreds.
The decisive play began with a remarkable save from senior goalie Avery Stamps, who initiated a successful clear for Skidmore. With tensions running high, the team strategically called a timeout to regroup and plan their next move. And it paid off. Coming out of the timeout, Gonsalves, the junior midfielder, showcased his skills by netting his second goal, ultimately sealing the deal for Skidmore.
Gonsalves wasn’t the only standout player of the game. David Koffler delivered a stellar performance, contributing three goals and two ground balls to the team’s effort, while Charlie McFadden chipped in with two goals and an assist. Stamps, guarding the net, displayed his prowess by making critical saves throughout the game, including four in the crucial fourth quarter.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Skidmore holding onto narrow leads in the first and second quarters. Despite Clarkson’s valiant efforts, Skidmore managed to maintain a slight edge heading into the final frame. However, Clarkson fought back fiercely, with Andrew Kearney leading the charge with five goals and six points for the Golden Knights.
In the end, it was Skidmore’s resilience that prevailed. Despite Clarkson’s late-game surge, Skidmore tied the game in the final minute of regulation, setting the stage for Gonsalves’ heroics in overtime.
