On cam: Charlotte passengers describe odor, evacuation of Frontier flight

A Frontier Airlines plane was evacuated Thursday at Charlotte Douglas International Airport before taking off due to a strong odor.

Frontier is currently investigating an unusual smell that led to the cancelation of a Charlotte flight heading to Orlando. As the airline looks into the incident, passengers who were onboard are speaking out about the scary experience.

With matching Mickey Mouse shirts and their suitcases packed, the Coxton family should be vacationing in Orlando. Instead, they're still in Charlotte.

"We really wanted to make this special for our children," said Shayla Coxton. "Unfortunately, the trip will be cut short."

Coxton and her kids boarded Frontier Flight 1759 Wednesday night ready to take off, but shortly after boarding they were told to evacuate due to a strong smell.

"It was very bad," Coxton said. "Five minutes after that the power goes off and we hear we need everybody to evacuate."

Coxton posted video on TikTok of passengers using the emergency slide. You can hear her daughter crying in the video.

The girl was looking for her dad and brother, who evacuated on the opposite side of the plane.

"And in that moment, fight or flight," Coxton said. "I saw a few people panicking around me and I immediately said we got to keep everybody calm because if there's a stampede, someone's gonna get hurt."

Frontier said there were 226 passengers onboard, and several shared photos.

One person was hurt while going down the slide and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Frontier offered to book passengers through another airline, but Coxton said no other flights were available, so they plan to drive to Disney and make the best of out their trip.

"Sometimes you just thank God for keeping us still and you know, keeping us grounded and finding the silver lining in it all," Coxton said.

It is still unclear what caused the smell.
