Overwash, flooding closes NC 12 on Ocracoke Island

As weather conditions deteriorate in the Outer Banks, a coastal North Carolina highway remains impassable due to flooding and overwash.

N.C. Highway 12 remains closed on the north end of Ocracoke Island due to continued rain and ocean overwash.

The highway is closed from the National Park Service Pony Pens to the ferry terminal at the north end of the island, and sand and overwash on the road continue to be a problem, according to the NCDOT.

On Thursday morning the state Department of Transportation posted a photo of N.C. Highway 12, writing:

"N.C. 12 remains open and passable from Oregon Inlet to Hatteras with some standing water and sand. Crews will be out today working to fortify protective dunes, so please slow down and give them room to work."

The northern end of N.C. Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island will stay closed until at least noon on Saturday, according to the NCDOT.

Additionally, in Rodanthe, at least five homes are being impacted by high surf.

Ferry service between Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island has also been impacted by the road closure. Drivers should take an alternate route.

Residents trying to access or leave Ocracoke Village should use ferries to or from Swan Quarter and Cedar Island.
