LOS ANGELES —The Dodgers have reached agreement on a multi-year contract extension with catcher Will Smith.
The agreement is expected to become official later Wednesday and could be as long as 10 years, an unprecedented commitment at the position.
Smith, who will turn 29 on Thursday, signed a one-year, $8.55 million contract for 2024, avoiding arbitration last winter. He has one more year of arbitration eligibility and would not have been eligible for free agency until after the 2025 season.
The Dodgers’ first-round pick out of the University of Louisville in 2016, Smith quickly developed into one the top offensive catchers in MLB. Smith made his first All-Star team last season, though a second-half slump dropped his OPS for the season to .797, his first season with a sub-.800 OPS.
