Woman and two children killed in crash on the N17 at Castlegar

A woman and two girls have died following a crash on the N17 in Co Mayo.

They sustained fatal injuries when their car collided with an articulated truck on the N17 at Castlegar, near Claremorris.

Gardaí and other emergency services are currently at the scene of the collision, which occurred around 2pm.

A Garda spokesperson said: “The driver (female) and two girls who were passengers in the car, were fatally injured.

“No other injuries have been reported.

“The road remains closed at this time and traffic diversions are in place. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators will conduct an examination of the scene.”

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to come forward and asked for road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to make this footage available to gardaí.

The spokesperson added: “Anyone with any information is asked to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 9372080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

“An Garda Síochána is aware that images of the crash scene are currently in circulation. Out of respect for the family, we are requesting these images are not shared.”

A total of 52 people have lost their lives on Irish roads between January 1 and March 26 - 10 more than for the same period last year.

A total of 14 people have died on Irish roads in March alone - which equates to a death on average almost every 48 hours.
