PM’s vision: Amul expands globally; launches fresh milk range in US

In a significant move aimed at expanding its global footprint, Amul, renowned for its iconic ‘Taste of India’ tagline, has ventured into international markets with the launch of its fresh milk range in the United States.

The announcement came during a meeting in Detroit on March 20, where Amul’s Managing Director, Jayen Mehta, revealed the strategic partnership with the Michigan Milk Producers Association.

This marks a historic milestone for Amul as it marks its first venture outside India, strategically targeting the robust Indian and Asian communities in the US market. Embracing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for global dairy dominance, Amul aims to establish a strong presence in key international markets.

Prime Minister Modi’s endorsement of Amul’s global aspirations adds weight to the endeavour. Addressing over 100,000 dairy farmers at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during GCMMF’s golden jubilee recently, Modi emphasized the importance of Amul’s role in the dairy sector.

The PM urged it to aspire to become the largest dairy organization globally. He highlighted the significant growth of India’s dairy sector, attributing it to the collective efforts of dairy farmers and cooperative initiatives like Amul.

Established in 1973, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the apex body of Amul, has been instrumental in revolutionizing India’s dairy industry. With 18 member unions representing over 3.6 million farmers across 18,600 villages in Gujarat, GCMMF has played a pivotal role in India’s emergence as the world’s largest producer of milk, commanding a 24% share of global milk production.

Amul’s foray into the US market builds upon India’s dairy revolution, championed by visionaries like Verghese Kurien. With an annual group turnover of Rs 72,000 crore, GCMMF ranks as the eighth-largest dairy organization globally and remains the largest farmer-owned dairy brand, exporting its products to more than 50 countries.

The launch of Amul’s fresh milk range in the United States signifies a significant step towards fulfilling Prime Minister Modi’s vision of harnessing the potential of India’s dairy sector on the global stage, while also catering to the evolving needs of consumers worldwide.
