The following student-athletes have been selected to The Washington Post’s 2023-24 All-Met team for boys’ swimming:
First team
Brady Begin, Sr., Churchill
A physical presence, the North Carolina commit highlighted his senior season with a first-place finish at Metros in the 500 freestyle (4:25.95), then took second in the event at states.
Simon Bermudez, Sr., Flint Hill
A first-team member last year, Bermudez dropped his 100 breaststroke time by 0.86 seconds. The senior won the 200 individual medley (1:47.13) and the 100 backstroke (47.68) at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association championships.
Nasim Elkassem, Sr., Churchill
Elkassem was a part of a loaded senior class that led the Bulldogs to a state title. The University of Southern California commit dominated the freestyle at Metros, winning the 50 in 20.39 and the 100 in 44.73.
Rian Graham, Sr., Herndon
Graham posted a time of 47.76 seconds in the 100 butterfly at the Virginia Class 6 state championships, qualifying him as an all-American, and won the 200 freestyle at the state meet, too.
Josh Howat, Jr., Lake Braddock
The junior has established himself as the top short-distance freestyler in the area. He sprinted to another first-place finish in the 50 freestyle (20.19) and 100 freestyle (44.38) at states.
Elliot Lee, Sr., Richard Montgomery
Lee emerged as one of the area’s top swimmers with a breakout senior year. Especially skilled in the butterfly, Lee is committed to Yale.
Evan Mackesy, Sr., Magruder
The Purdue commit competed with Begin to become the best long-distance swimmer in the area. Mackesy topped the Churchill star at Metros in the 500 freestyle with a 4:29.04 finish.
Eli Martin, Sr., Washington-Liberty
The Virginia Tech commit set his personal best in the 100 breaststroke at the Virginia Class 6 state championships with a time of 54.65 seconds.
JT Schmid, Sr., Robinson
Another future Tar Heel, Schmid finished as the top backstroker in Virginia. At the state meet he won the 200 backstroke, the 200 IM and was part of a pair of relay victories.
Kyle Wang, Sr., Churchill
One of three Churchill first-teamers, he won the 200 freestyle at Metros with a 1:38.14 and then won the 100 and 200 at the Maryland Class 4A/3A state meet. Wang is committed to Northwestern.
Coach of the Year
Dennis Witol, Churchill
Witol took full advantage of a talented and experienced roster that featured four Division I seniors. The second-year head coach led the Bulldogs through a bounce-back season, as they won Metros and the Maryland 4A/3A state title.
