Eastern Alamance picks Mitch Mitchener to take over football program

Eastern Alamance High School has its replacement for longtime head football coach John Kirby.
The school's football account announced on Monday evening that Mitch Mitchener has been hired to lead the program. Mitchener was most recently found on the sidelines of Western Alamance high as the linebackers coach last fall. Before that, he made a mark Eastern Guilford High School as the Wildcats' defensive coordinator. He served in that role from the 2019 season through the 2022 season, giving him experience under Tony Aguilar, a longtime assistant at Eastern Alamance and now the head coach at Southeast Alamance High.
Mitchener is a former football player and class of 2005 graduate of Western Alamance High School. He went on to play at Appalachian State University.
He's been an assistant coach for 15 years, with stops at Western Alamance, Topsail High, and Eastern Guilford.
It will be the first time that Eastern Alamance has had a new head football coach in 32 years. Under Kirby, the Eagles have finished with a winning record in 19 consecutive seasons. They've reached double digit wins in 14 of those seasons.
Eastern Alamance is coming off of an 8-3 overall record in 2023.
