When we interviewed Jimbo Mathus in 2019, he reflected on the sharp turn toward the personal in his album “Incinerator,” wondering whether he “was just looking to see, like, who’s with me? Who’s really with me?” And it’s a fair question, given the sweeping territory his catalog has trod. The self-described “Arkansas son-in-law” is maybe best known as the founder and frontman of New Orleans swing/jazz outfit Squirrel Nut Zippers, but his music wanders through gospel traditions and Delta blues and punk rock and bluegrass, always seeing the big stuff — death, birth, work, fishing — with a mystic’s eye. He’s an enthralling live performer, and this two-show stand at the White Water Tavern — to be recorded for a live album from Single Lock Records — is bound to straddle Saturday and the Sabbath aptly, with doses of both the sacred and the profane. Editor’s note: Though Sunday’s show is free, tickets are only available at the door first-come, first-served.
